2011 Wetzel Award Honors Edward and Elizabeth Kozel, Sr.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful,
committed citizens can change the world. Indeed,
it is the only thing that ever has.
—Margaret Mead

Betty and Ed Kozel, Sr., were presented with the fifth annual Wetzel Community Leadership Award during  a luncheon at the Vintners Inn, Santa Rosa, on November 16. The award is named for longtime friends of the Healthcare Foundation and generous members of the community, Maggie and Harry Wetzel. The Leadership Award honors those who exemplify humanitarian values in action.

“Our philosophy is to make these donations while we’re alive so we can see them at work,” says Ed, “so we can see the results.” And Betty adds they like the company they keep at the Healthcare Foundation: “We’re very proud of the advances made at Healdsburg Hospital through the generosity of so many other donors.”

The Kozels’ generosity includes the recent establishment of the Kozel Stroke Institute at Healdsburg District Hospital, as well as contributions to St. John’s library and gym and the Hannah Boys Center. They have also created perpetual scholarships for high school students.
